Planning

Together with the community, businesses, and organizations, the Miles City Planning & Community Services program strives to ensure that the unique qualities that make Miles City a great place to live, work, and do business are maintained. It does so by providing professional assistance in planning. The City contracts planning services, with the contract City Planner working in conjunction with the Public Works Department to ensure the program’s functions are carried out properly and efficiently. Inquiries pertaining to the program’s responsibilities, listed below, should be directed to the Public Works Director, who will either handle the inquiry or put you in touch with the contract City Planner or other appropriate personnel.

Planning & Community Services is responsible for the administration of the following:

  • Subdivision Regulations, including subdivision reviews, examination of subdivision exemptions, and survey reviews
  • Zoning, in conjunction with the Public Works Director who serves as the City Zoning Administrator; the contract Planner supports and advises the Zoning Administrator, and reviews certain zoning-related applications and development plans for zoning compliance
  • City Land Leasing
  • Annexation
  • Growth Policy (administration, updates, and implementation)

The Planner also works with the community on policy development to guide growth and supports the Planning Board and Zoning Commission as they update such documents as the Growth Policy, Subdivision Regulations, or Zoning Regulations.
